Anyone who watches day time TV and talk shows such as Ricky Lake will know about the Boot Camp edition of behavioural adjustment in problem children. Drill sergents will yell at kids to do push up, pick up messes, dress in a uniform and do long hikes or hard runs. You will see a short time compressed version where there is a lot of yelling and tough love. A lot of people see these kids turn around and support the idea. When we hear about a death related to these boot camps, we think 'the drill instructor is at fault' and not 'this was a bad idea through and through'. Sometimes, people think they can do a better job and make sure their kids wont suffer the same fate. Well, not in Alabama.
Savannah Hardin, nine years old, has passed away after being forced to run for three hours around the house as punishment for eating a peice of chocolate. She was encouraged to run harder by her grandmother who yelled 'Move it! Move it!', much like the 'Drill Sergents' on TV. Savannah's mom and grandmother were arrested for agrivated murder.
I had commented earlier on a video of a chinese man making his toddler run nearly naked through the snow to improve his health. I had said we cannot interfere with other cultures and must show restraint when judging others. I am ready to revise my position.
When visiting the United States, we should enforce every precaution to protect children visiting, from the moment they arrive to their departure, and be ready to intervein the moment a situation we cannot tollerate pops up and act in the child's best interests. Our reach stops at our boarders, but while within, parents must respect our norms.
Like wise, Savannah's parents should have respected the norms of parenting, but some how, I think they respected what they honestly thought was an accepted method, which makes their up coming trial just as much about what sensational methods we see on T.V. as the individual actions taken that lead to a little girl's death. Guilt of one hopefully will lead to guilt of the other and I hope neither will be aquited of anything, but I do wish mercy will be shown on Savannah's mother if she shows remourse and the ability to learn from this tragic mistake.
